Description
Loaded nacho cheese fries with crispy fries, homemade nacho cheese sauce, and customizable toppings perfect for game day or casual hangouts.
Ingredients
- 1 pound (450g) frozen French fries (crinkle-cut or shoestring)
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 200g)
- 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese (about 100g)
- 3 tablespoons (45g) unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons (24g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (480ml) whole milk or 2%
- 1/2 cup sliced jalapeños (fresh or pickled, optional)
- 1 cup diced tomatoes (about 150g)
- 1/2 cup sliced green onions (about 50g)
- 1 cup canned black beans, drained and rinsed
- Sour cream (for serving)
- Optional extras: cooked ground beef, crumbled bacon, sliced olives, guacamole
Instructions
- Cook the frozen fries according to package directions by baking on a baking sheet or air-frying until crispy and golden. Spread fries in a single layer for even crisping.
- While fries cook, melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly but not browned.
- Slowly whisk in milk and simmer gently for 4-5 minutes until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese a handful at a time until melted and smooth.
- Prepare toppings by dicing tomatoes, slicing jalapeños, chopping green onions, and draining black beans. Have cooked ground beef or bacon ready if using.
- Once fries are cooked, spread them on a large serving platter or baking sheet.
- Pour warm nacho cheese sauce evenly over fries.
- Scatter tomatoes, jalapeños, black beans, and green onions on top.
- Serve immediately with dollops of sour cream on the side. Optionally garnish with fresh cilantro or a squeeze of lime.
Notes
[‘Use sharp cheddar cheese for better melting and flavor.’, ‘Do not skip the roux (butter and flour) to avoid runny or grainy cheese sauce.’, ‘Serve immediately as cheese sauce thickens and fries lose crispness when cooled.’, ‘Reheat leftovers gently in a skillet with a splash of milk to restore creaminess and crispness.’, ‘Customize toppings to your preference, including adding cooked ground beef or bacon for extra protein.’, ‘For gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with cornstarch or gluten-free flour blend.’]
